Student Life Cycle

The student life cycle is essentially the time that is spent by the student at SAIT from the first to the final year. At each and every step in this life cycle the student learns, imbibes, improves and evolves constantly. This would help you get a little bit of idea as to how a student spends his/her four years in college.

The First Year in College: a Fresher’s Life

Jan to May

The second semester of the first year starts with a lot of eagerness. A week or two goes by as the faculties take regular lectures and give assignments on the rest of the basic engineering courses to be covered in the first year.
As the results are declared some students exult while a few lament that they could’ve done better. At this stage the PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) Programme is put into effect. Work groups of students are formed with the good students helping out the rest during tutorials and assignments.
The Finishing School continues at its weekend schedule without affecting the regular classes. Students make use of the language lab to improve spoken English, learn to make and deliver good & effective presentations and the Foreign Language classes takes its usual course forward.
Students start spending more time at the Knowledge Resource Centre going through books, journals, periodicals and AV-Resources. They are now familiar with the academic culture, are aware of the rules of discipline and feel at ease with their peers and faculties.
. As the year nears its end, the students give their feedback on the faculties about their performance throughout the semester on different parameters like content coverage, delivery effectiveness, subject knowledge and many more.

The Second Year in College: The Sophomore SAITian

As the Second Year begins the students are full of newfound energy and enthusiasm for the year ahead. They’ve looked forward to meet all their friends in college after the vacations so the session turns out to be a small celebration of the reunion.
The campus is abuzz with activities as the students decide upon which committee and club to join. Clubs are open all the students while for the committees the faculty start to conduct interviews.
The Industry Interface Development Centre (IIDC) conducts its interview for the Student Placement Committee, which will help the Placement Coordinator with all the placement activities. Then there are the Departmental Clubs, The CSR Club, The Magazine Committee and the Green SAIT Club to name a few.
The new first year batch also joins as the second year students take upon themselves to have a ragging free environment. The students have a healthy interaction with the each other and a PAL is allotted to every second year student from the batch of first year. Second Year students also prepare for the fresher’s event to be conducted to welcome the new batch.
Simultaneously the students also start participating in various paper presentation contest and tech-fests across the country. The faculty also continuously guides them while they prepare to participate in such events of importance.
From their resume building exercise at the Finishing School the students now very well know how important it is to have these things on their résumé.A fruitful semester with a lot of activities comes to an end with the semester examinations taking place.

Jan to May

The students are well aware that the next three semesters are the most crucial period of their academic career. The last semester was well spent with a few paper presentation and live projects to their credit.
But they know that this semester will be busier with new certifications that the students need to take like certifications from Microsoft, Cisco, Java, SAP, VLSI Design, Six Sigma, CAD/CAM, Real Estate Management and Human Settlement Management and many more.
The students also start helping out the faculties in their research projects so as to have hands-on experience on live research in their respective fields. They also seek faculties’ help in all their academic endeavours like paper presentations, project work and certifications.
Taking time out of their academic schedule, students also take part in CSR activities in small groups. Students take evening classes for underprivileged children from nearby villages, conducting computer literacy programmes for youth residing in nearby villages and many more such activities.
Finally the time has come as many companies line up for selecting students for Summer Training/ Internship after this term. This Summer Internship is one of the most important aspects of the undergraduate degree as it gives the students a hand on experience of the real world.

Pre-Final: Fastening the seat belts

As the session begins, the students are fully aware that now is the time to decide their future career. Students depending upon their attitude and aptitude choose between all the career options they have. They either decide to join the industry, take up higher studies or go for a management course. Whatever the choice is, the students get full support of the college.
The Finishing School now guides them in CAT, GMAT preparation in case they decide to go for an MBA degree, GRE and GATE preparation in case they decide to go for a post graduation in their respective discipline or help them prepare for the campus interviews for many of the companies that come for direct placement to the industries.
The students start taking the new course introduced in the semester while revising whatever they have studied during the previous years of graduation. They start to complete the different certification they had decided to obtain in the last year.
The faculty at Finishing School starts conducting Mock HR Interviews for students, helping the students with revision capsules of course content and also teaches subject topics that are required in the industry.
Students finalize and freeze their résumé which cover a wide area and includes paper presentations, live industry projects, technical certifications, summer internship details, other short term courses taken and last but not the least the academic performance of the students.
These are then submitted to the IIDC (Placement Cell) for forwarding it to companies that are coming up for placements in the following year.The mid-term and end term exams take their own course as students prepare for these too.

Jan to May

The time for placement and entrance exams has arrived. The students prepare hard for the challenges to come. There’s a slight anxiety but a permanent self-assuredness because of the preparation that has been done during the last three years.
Companies keep pouring in for a long time and keep on selecting students based on their preference and skill set desired. In the mean time other students also prepare for their entrance tests for further studies.
Since this is a crucial juncture for the student, to enhance the mental strength of the students the institute also arranges for the Art of Living course so that they get psychological and emotional robustness. The placement process continues as the students also appear for their final exams for the third year and enter the last stage.

Final Year: Taking Off

The major project of an Engineer is not just a part of the course curriculum, but a very important step towards building his career and an opportunity for learning the nuances of applying technology to real life. Emphasis will be laid on students coming up with original ideas for their major projects.
The synopsis of the same will be evaluated by the faculty in the 7th Trimester itself. A faculty mentor will guide students through this incubation period of the project. (Industrial Interface Committee can be roped in for this if we want industry related major projects. Another idea will be social ventures etc.
During this time most students prepare themselves to face companies or management schools for interview and group discussions. Students will be trained on the ways of participating in a group discussions and facing the interview. This will help improve the quality of experience of corporates with the institute and they would want to recruit more often from the institute.
Finally it’s time to bear the fruits for all the preparation and hard work that has been done for the past three years. Students finally take their journey forward as things start taking concrete shape and brace themselves for their lives ahead.
